TIAGO MONTEIRO: “COMO SE NADA TIVESSE ACONTECIDO”

Após um ano em branco, devido ao acidente sofrido em setembro de 2017, Tiago Monteiro está de volta ao WTCR Oscaro 2019. Ao volante do seu Honda Civic Type R TCR, apenas deseja uma coisa: regressar ao topo.

Foi há três meses, no lendário circuito de Suzuka, no Japão. No dia 27 de outubro de 2018 mais exatamente … 415 dias depois de um acidente durante uma sessão de testes, que quase lhe custou a vida, Tiago Monteiro retomou o início de uma corrida da taça do mundo de carros de Turismo. “Havia vontade, motivação, mas também o desconhecido. Eu não sabia como isso iria acontecer … Eu não sabia como iria reagir física e psicologicamente “, lembra o piloto de 42 anos. Hoje, o tempo das dúvidas, medos e apreensões acabou. A dois meses do início da temporada 2019 do WTCR Oscaro, Monteiro está pronto. A sua reabilitação e tratamentos médicos foram cumpridos, coloca a sorte do seu lado para estar pronto no dia da estreia: “Sinto-me bem . Neste inverno, trabalhei muito para estar no topo a todos os níveis”. Melhor, chega a assumir que “é como se nada tivesse acontecido a setembro de 2017” antes de acrescentar:

"QUANDO ME PREPARO, QUANDO TREINO, QUANDO FAÇO REUNIÕES, É COMO SE NUNCA TIVESSE SOFRIDO UM ACIDENTE. PARA MIM, ESTÁ ESQUECIDO. "

E ainda bem. Na sua cabeça, as coisas estão muito claras: “Se no meu regresso a Suzuka tivesse tido algum tipo de receio, não estaria de volta“, destaca o ex-piloto de Fórmula 1.

Ultrapassado o obstáculo, diz-se “focado na próxima temporada“. Um ano e meio depois de ser travado pelo destino na sua busca pelo título mundial, Monteiro está determinado a voltar ao seu nível anterior. Para isso, não há cinquenta soluções: “tenho que me preparar como em todos os outros anos“, explica. Duas fases de trabalho são, portanto, necessárias: uma parte pessoal para ser desenvolvida física e mentalmente, e depois uma parte coletiva, para “desenvolver o carro com a equipa“.

Além disso, o português vai encontrar uma equipa que ele conhece perfeitamente, já que, pelo oitavo ano consecutivo, estará aos comandos de um Honda. O número 18 do WTCR Oscaro justifica a decisão: “Estudei o mercado e analisei todas as propostas. Tenho uma ligação muito forte com a Honda e não me vejo a continuar sem eles. Isso dá-me muita confiança. “

Embora não se saiba qual a estrutura onde Tiago Monteiro estará inserido, assim como quem será o companheiro de equipa para próxima época, já se conhecem os dois outros pilotos Honda da grelha: o argentino Esteban Guerrieri (terceiro no campeonato no ano passado) e Nestor Girolami. A dupla alinhará no Team Munnich Motorsport: All-Inkl.com Racing.

Na vanguarda

Com este recrutamento ambicioso, a Honda pretende esmagar a concorrência nesta segunda temporada do WTCR. Para levar a cabo a missão, a estrutura japonesa decidiu usar a pré-temporada para desenvolver o Honda Civic Type R TCR. Depois de testes em Itália na semana passada, os pilotos Honda contarão ainda com sete novas sessões de testes em todo o mundo antes do início da competição. Cada com vista a melhorar e ajustar as configurações de corrida. Para Tiago, o objetivo é simples: “Temos que estar o mais próximo possível do nível das equipas da Lynk & Co e da Hyundai, favoritas para esta temporada .”

Num campeonato mais relevante que nunca, Monteiro mantém os pés na terra. Com um total de 31 títulos nacionais e internacionais em jogo, sabe que a luta será terrível. Contudo, não perde o otimismo. Quer “lutar pelo título“, apesar do seu ano em branco. “O meu objetivo é voltar ao nível que tinha na altura do meu acidente (primeiro lugar no ranking WTCC 2017). Se vou conseguir? Não sei. Mas, uma coisa é certa! Tenho a velocidade e a experiência para desempenhar os papéis principais“, frisou.

Temos encontro marcado no próximo dia 5 de abril, no circuito Moulay El Hassan de Marraquexe para a primeira ronda do WTCR Oscaro. Um circuito bem familiar para o piloto português que venceu uma das duas corridas em 2017.

Honda customer teams prepare for battle in Vila Real

Honda’s WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup customer teams are braced for action as the series moves onto the spectacular Vila Real street circuit in Portugal this weekend.

At 4.8 kilometres in length and with laptimes of over two minutes, the Circuito Internacional do Vila Real is one of the longest on the WTCR calendar and will provide a huge challenge for the drivers of the six Honda Civic Type R TRCs contesting the city-centre event.

 A win and a second place at Zandvoort last month put Yann Ehrlacher on top of the Drivers’ Championship and moved ALL-INKL.COM Münnich to the head of the Teams’ points race.

 With a nine-point advantage over his nearest rival, the Frenchman aims to maintain the momentum that has delivered two victories and nine points finishes from the 12 races held so far.

 His Argentinian team-mate, Esteban Guerrieri, has a win and one further podium to his name in 2018. He knows that three solid points finishes are likely to move him up from his current seventh spot in the points table.

 Fellow Münnich driver James Thompson raced at Vila Real in World Touring Cars in 2016 and is aiming to use that experience to his advantage after scoring his first podium of the season at Zandvoort last month.

 Benjamin Lessennes has been one of the stars of the season; the 18-year-old TCR Benelux Champion stepping up to world level for the first time with Boutsen Ginion Racing and achieving three top-five finishes already.

 This will be the young Belgian’s first time racing at Vila Real, but he will have Tiago Monteiro on hand for assistance while the local hero continues his recovery from injuries sustained in a testing incident last year.

 His team-mate, Tom Coronel, was victorious on Vila Real’s streets in 2016, but missed last year’s Portuguese races due to a practice incident that left his car with irreparable damage.

 After scoring his best result of the year with seventh at his home event at Zandvoort last time out, he’s determined to carry that momentum to the challenging Portuguese street circuit.

 For the third time in 2018, a sixth Honda will be on the grid as a wildcard entrant. In Portugal it will be Tiago Monteiro’s protégé, Jose Rodrigues, who will be run by Target Competition.

 The Vila Real event marks the WTCR debut for both; TCR Italy regular Jose having raced at the circuit last year in the FIA European Touring Car Cup in a Honda Civic Type R TCR, and Target having won back-to-back TCR Germany titles with Hondas in 2016-17.

 Uniquely, the Vila Real circuit is the only one on the WTCR calendar to feature a Joker Lap. This rallycross-inspired concept is an additional section of track that all drivers must use once during each race; the aim being to increase overtaking.

“I love street circuits because you have to be just as committed as regular tracks, but the punishment for getting it wrong is huge and it’s hugely rewarding to do well, as I have with my wins in Marrakech and Vila Real in 2016 and my good results in Macau. I’ve seen the highs and lows at this track; winning two years ago and then suffering a wheel failure that led to me crashing in practice in 2017. I’d prefer to have a little less drama this time!”

It's been an intensive day of FIA WTCR / Oscaro testing at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for all five Honda Civic Type R TCRs.

The Boutsen Ginion Racing cars of Benjamin Lessennes and Tom Coronelplus all-inkl.com münnich motorsport's Yann Ehrlacher, Esteban Guerrieriand James Thompson all completing useful mileage with the season kick-off just over a week away.

Ehrlacher was the best-placed of the Civics in P4 in the afternoon session.
