Honda continues its fight for the FIA World Touring Car Championship on the streets of Vila Real, Portugal, this weekend with three drivers hungry for success.

Having crossed the line first at every street circuit since the start of 2016, the Civic WTCC is aiming to power Tiago Monteiro, Norbert Michelisz and Ryo Michigami to strong results as the season reaches its midway point.

Tiago’s victories in Morocco and Hungary have put him second in the Drivers’ Championship, just two points away from the top spot.

Having grown up in the Douro region in which Vila Real is located, the Portuguese driver was treated to a hero’s reception at his home circuit last year when he claimed a hugely emotional victory. Should he repeat the achievement, it would be a fourth win of his WTCC career in Portugal.

After twice being taken out of victory contention by contact from rival cars, Norbert leapt back into title contention with a strong second-place finish at the Nurburgring last month.

Seventh in the Drivers’ Championship, the Hungarian is within a Main Race win’s worth of points of the series lead and has already put his recent bad luck behind him as the WTCC embarks upon its final European-based event of 2017.

Norbert has finished on the podium in Vila Real in each of the past two seasons and is aiming to repeat that achievement this weekend as he continues his surge back up the points table.

Unlike Tiago and Norbert, Ryo has never raced at the Circuito Internacional de Vila Real, but has been learning the layout on a Simulator as he prepares to do battle on the streets and add to his current points tally.

New to the Honda Racing Team JAS driver – and all the competitors – this weekend is the addition of a ‘joker lap’; the first time such an innovation has been used in an FIA World Championship circuit-racing series.

An alternative route through the final corner has been added, which each driver must use once during races; the aim being to increase the likelihood of overtaking on the narrow 4.6km circuit and create an additional action spot for fans as drivers employ different strategies.

The Hondas will all carry 50kg of compensation weight this weekend, making them 20kg lighter than they were in Germany last time out.

Após alguns avanços e recuos num processo que, desde o início, não se afigurou fácil, é com grande orgulho que anunciamos que o piloto Manuel Pedro Fernandes participará na ronda portuguesa do FIA WTCC, a decorrer no Circuito Internacional de Vila Real, a sua terra natal, já nos próximos dias 24 e 25 de Junho, ao volante de um Lada Vesta WTCC TC 1, da RC Motorsport.

Após o insucesso na participação em 2015, devido a razões às quais somos alheios, e os excelentes resultados obtidos na prova vilarrealense do ETCC em 2016, o piloto e nós enquanto estrutura, concretizaremos assim um desejo antigo.
Esta participação só será possível devido à ajuda de alguns intervenientes, os quais não podemos deixar de mencionar em jeito de agradecimento.

- Ao Tiago Monteiro, pelo seu forcing precioso diante de várias entidades, ele que desde o início se manifestou agradado com a possível presença do Manuel Pedro Fernandes.

Comunicação do piloto Manuel Pedro Fernandes

Manuel Fernandes will go from European Touring Car Cup winner to WTCC rookie when he contests his home round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship in Vila Real, Portugal next week (23-25 June).

Fernandes won the inaugural ETCC Race of Vila Real on the challenging street track in the northern Portugal city where he lives last June, but will step up to the big brother WTCC in a third RC Motorsport entry when the championship makes its third visit there later this month.

He will partner season rookies Yann Ehrlacher and Kevin Gleason in RC Motorsport’s exciting line-up, which expands to a three-car operation for the first time.

And his inclusion on the expanded WTCC grid means local fans will have two Portuguese drivers to support this year with Tiago Monteiro, the 2016 WTCC Race of Portugal winner, heading the charge for the factory Honda team as he bids to wrestle back the championship lead.

“I’m really excited,” said Fernandes, who began competing in single seaters and has enjoyed recent success in the Abarth Trophy series. “I missed the opportunity to do this race two years ago but I knew inside that one day if I had another chance to participate I wouldn’t let it go. This is the opportunity to do one thing that I love in a no-pressure environment. My preparation will be on the racing weekend only but it’s my city, a track that I know very well and with no need to get any results. It’s important I enjoy this as much as possible.”

François Ribeiro, Head of Eurosport Events, the WTCC promoter, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Manuel, a second Portuguese driver of course, to the WTCC family for his home race. Manuel is a driver with considerable experience and ability. He’s well aware of the level of the WTCC and the drivers but he’s approaching this opportunity in a very sensible way, he has a good team around him and we wish him well.”

WTCC Race of Portugal first took place in 2007 with Vila Real entering the fray in 2015. A circuit oozing history and intrigue, racing has been held on the hillside roads of the city since 1931, when Gaspar Sameiro and Ercilio Barbosa conquered the original 7.150-kilometre course in a Ford Model A. The current 4.785-kilometre layout is a challenging blend of turns, climbs and descents and is dubbed the Nürburgring Nordschleife of the South. While chicanes have been installed for safety reasons, the spectacle remains unaltered with speeds nearing 240kph on the final downhill section.

New for 2017 is the inclusion of the ‘joker’ lap, a first for world championship motor racing. It will require drivers to take an alternative, longer, route once in the Opening Race and once in the Main Race to further spice up the street racing action.

Joker lap tem luz verde e já está definida

Vila Real será o palco da estreia da Joker Lap no WTCC, um conceito inovador para o mundial de turismos, que será implementado pela primeira vez no traçado transmontano.

Desenhada para apimentar a acção nos traçados citadinos, que nem sempre favorecem as ultrapassagens, o conceito usado no WRX, exige que os pilotos usem uma parte alternativa do circuito (pelo menos uma vez), tanto na corrida de Abertura como na corrida Principal.

A Joker Lap de Vila Real está situada na última curva do traçado, curva 26, com a aprovação da FIA e da autoridades locais. O desenho da Joker Lap pretende usar a rotunda da MCoutinho, como já era o desejo do WTCC. Os pilotos terão então de fazer a rotunda virando primeiro à esquerda e depois virando à direita, ao contrário do que acontece no traçado regular, retomando a pista na recta da meta. É esperado que a Joker Lap adicione 2 seg ao tempo normalmente feito pelos pilotos, o que poderá aumentar as oportunidades de ultrapassagens.

A Joker Lap não poderá ser tomada antes da 3ª volta de ambas as corridas, mas poderá ser testada nos treinos livres do dia 24 de Junho.

A localização da Joker Lap será destacada, de forma a facilitar o seu reconhecimento aos espectadores e os grafismos usados pelo WTCC permitirão entender de forma instantânea  se os pilotos já efectuaram a Joker Lap.

François Ribeiro, chefe da Eurosport Events, o promotor do WTCC ficou feliz com a confirmação de um desejo seu que já era antigo:

“O conceito de ” joker lap “funciona muito bem no rallycross, e estou certo de que vai trazer uma dimensão extra à corrida do WTCC em Vila Real. Abrirá novas oportunidades e novas estratégias para os pilotos, e pode até mudar o rumo da corrida. É claro que nunca iremos comprometer a segurança e como tal, trabalhamos de muito perto com nossos colegas da FIA e com as autoridades em Vila Real para implementar um traçado que corresponda aos nossos requisitos, mas que também esteja em conformidade com todos os rigorosos padrões de segurança”.

Tiago Monteiro, o homem da casa, que no ano passado conseguiu uma vitória histórica em Vila Real deu a sua opinião sobre a novidade:
“É óptimo tentar novas ideias, novas opções para apimentar o espectáculo. Quando se está na pole position, de facto  não se quer a Joker Lap, porque não se quer perder a liderança. Mas não saindo da pole position, há uma nova oportunidade para ultrapassar “.

Yvan Muller, quatro vezes campeão no WTCC e agora piloto de testes para a Cyan Racing afirmou o seguinte:

É como o MAC3. Todos disseram ‘ah, é uma coisa louca’, mas é algo novo. E quando é novo, mostra algo diferente, o que é sempre bom. Temos de tentar coisas novas, trazer novos elementos positivos e atraentes “.
