Honda claimed the first pole position of the 2017 FIA World Touring Car Championship thanks to a stunning performance in qualifying from Tiago Monteiro in Morocco.

Tiago had set the pace in opening practice and then again in the second section of qualifying. With the pressure on, he smashed the official pole position record at the Circuit Moulay el Hassan in Marrakech in 1m21.792s to take the top spot.

It was the seventh pole position for the Honda Civic WTCC and the fourth of Tiago’s career; the Portuguese driver receiving five bonus points for his World Championship campaign for his achievement.

His Castrol Honda World Touring Car team-mate Norbert Michelisz recovered well to set the pace in FP2 after missing the opening session due to a minor oil leak. After setting the pace in Q1, his Q3 lap was good enough for a strong third place on the grid.

Ryo Michigami, who becomes a full-time WTCC driver this year, made a sensational last-gasp effort in Q2 to elevate himself from 11th to ninth spot on his final lap.

Not only was this the best qualifying result ever achieved by a Japanese driver in the WTCC, it also put Ryo on the front row for Sunday’s reversed-grid Opening Race. Norbert and Tiago start the opener from eighth and 10th respectively.

The Opening Race takes place at 1635 while the Main Race will start at 1745.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, Ryo’s qualifying times were cancelled after he mistakenly did not stop for a weight check when instructed. He will start both races from the back of the grid as a result.

“This is exactly what we needed. As a team we’ve worked incredibly hard over the winter to develop the Civic. We knew that we’d made progress, but you still have to show it, in front of everyone else, to prove that the progress is real. Norbi was very fast all day, so I knew I had to set a very good laptime to get pole, but I did and this is the result. I was pretty happy with my lap and to have pole for the first Main Race of the year feels fantastic. On a street track pole position is a bigger advantage than normal because it’s so difficult to overtake, so I’m aiming to make the most of it.”

“Today is a tremendous team result and we have to be happy with that. Personally, I’m a little disappointed to only qualify third because Tiago showed that the car was capable of pole position. I didn’t have the confidence on my Q3 lap to push to the absolute limit, so I don’t think I could have matched Tiago’s time no matter the circumstance. I missed all of FP1 with a small issue, but I honestly don’t know if missing 45 minutes of track time made a difference. I’m confident of scoring big points tomorrow.”

“I’m pretty pleased with the way qualifying turned out. Ninth is OK for my first time on this circuit and second for the reversed-grid race gives me an excellent opportunity to win – which is my aim. I have to thank my engineer Nicola, who made a great decision to change the tyre pressures right at the end of Q2, which helped unlock an extra bit of speed and got me up into a very important P9. Unfortunately my times were cancelled because of a mistake in the pits, but tomorrow I'll see what I can achieve.”

The 2 FIA WTCC pole men for Marrakech Grand Prix. 👊🏼🙈👍 Race 1 me and race 2 Tiago Monteiro lets go get those 🏆🏆 trophies!

Tiago Monteiro ganha a corrida principal do WTCC em Marrocos e lidera um Mundial FIA (tal como no ano passado, mas acabou desclassificado).

“It’s a fantastic feeling for myself and the whole team to win the first Main Race of the season and be leading the Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ Championships. Overtaking is always tough on street circuits, so taking pole position yesterday was more than 50 per cent of the job. I made a good start, had to be very careful with my pace to make sure I didn’t over-work the brakes or the tyres on a very hot day, and took the chequered flag. To head Norbi home in a one-two finish for the team is great.”

Tiago Monteiro

58ea90e107809.jpg

“Today is a great result for the team and I have to congratulate Tiago on his win. Today’s result was all down to my start. I made a good getaway and made it up to P2 by the first corner. It got pretty close with a few other cars through Turn One, but after that, I was confident of holding my place because it’s very hard to overtake here and my Honda has been fantastic all weekend. This is a strong start to my season.”

Norbert Michelisz

58ea911c8f6f2.jpg

“It was a mixed day for me. I’m disappointed to have been taken out of the Opening Race after I’d made a very good start and made up a couple of positions. My rear suspension was broken, but because it happened early on, my mechanics a chance to get the car fixed properly before the Main Race. Scoring a point was a good result, but I need to continue to work on my race pace at the coming events. I’m sure this will come as my experience of the WTCC increases.”

Ryo Michigami

Honda took an early lead of the 2017 FIA World Touring Car Championship with a dominant one-two finish in Morocco from Tiago Monteiro and Norbert Michelisz.

Tiago started the Main Race from pole position and drove an inch-perfect race on the Circuit Moulay el Hassan in Marrakech; the Portuguese leading every lap to win by less than a second from his Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team-mate.

It was Tiago’s 10th WTCC victory and gave him a seven-point advantage over Norbert in the Drivers’ Championship.

Hungarian Norbert, who secured his 32nd podium in the series, had earlier finished fifth in the Opening Race; one place ahead of his team-mate.

Honda, who now have 15 WTCC victories, lead the Manufacturers’ points race.

Fellow factory driver Ryo Michigami, who was racing in Morocco for the first time, secured his first WTCC point with 10th place in the Main Race in his Honda Racing Team JAS Civic.

The Japanese driver had been on course for a similar finish in the Opening Race after making a superb start. Unfortunately contact from a rival driver bent his left-rear suspension, forcing him to retire in the pits.

The next round of the WTCC takes place at the historic Monza circuit in Italy on April 22-23.

Sziasztok!

Véget ért a marokkói hétvége.

17799287_1668566006493728_4870371116286068832_n.jp

Race2: A srácok óriási bravúrt végrehajtva megjavították az autót, rajt a boxból. Az autó sajnos jobban sérült, mint gondoltuk, így csak a verseny befejezése lehetett a cél.

Óriási köszönet a Zengő Motorsport összes szerelőinek, kivételes munkát végeztek a hétvége folyamán!

LADA feel the heat in qualifying for the FIA WTCC Race of Japan

The heat and humidity that welcomed the LADA SPORT ROSNEFT team as they arrived at the Twin Ring Motegi Circuit in Japan for Round 17 and 18 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship did not relent as the hottest conditions of the year created new challenges for the team’s drivers.

With the track temperature at 54 degrees, the trio of Lada Vesta TC1 cars set out in Q1 hoping for enough speed to progress into Q2 for the twelve fastest cars having had reasonable pace through the day's earlier practice sessions.

Nicky Catsburg who had led the trio on the timesheets in two practice sessions was again quickest of the three in Q1, posting a time good enough for P7 to progress into Q2. Unfortunately, luck was not on the side of his teammates on this occasion particularly for Gabriele Tarquini as a mandatory weight check in the session by the stewards interrupted the Italian’s plans and prevented him from setting a time on new tyres at the end of the session as planned. The result - a place outside the TOP12 and no progression. Hugo Valente did not fare much better also just missing out having opted not to make the final run on new tyres.

Catsburg pushed hard in Q2 and was rewarded with P4/P7 starts for tomorrows two races (4th Septmeber) which pleased the Dutchman "It was seriously hot in the car, so much so that the gear shifter was burning my hand through the glove, the temperatures and humidity are extremely high. I am quite happy with the job today, a second row start in the Opening race is better than Argentina and we are still carrying quite a lot of ballast. I am hoping for some cooler conditions and good races tomorrow and maybe a lighter car for the next round in China".

Gabriele Tarquini " It was very hard. My plan was to go with new tyres at the end of Q1 but the weight check took longer than usual so I lost the chance of a third run. It is a shame as the car was really good with some changes we had made from free practice, tomorrow in dry conditions from where we start will be very hard".

Hugo Valente was left disappointed "We are a bit heavy in terms of success ballast but I did expect to be in Q2, in the end we didn’t do the third run as sitting in 6th spot with three minutes of the session to go you are safe, it was not expected that so many others would improve. In the end it was a mistake to stay in the pit".

Tomorrow’s two races take place at the Twin Ring Motegi Circuit 4th September and can be watched live on Eurosport at 07.30 (CET) and 08.30 (CET).

LADA SPORT ROSNEFT made to fight for points in FIA WTCC Race of Japan

The hot Japanese weather spilled over to deliver heated racing for the LADA SPORT ROSNEFT WTCC team in today’s two races (4th September) as the Russian Manufacturer’s drivers were made to fight hard to salvage points in difficult conditions.

Catsburg starting the opening race in P4 found himself dropping into the pack after a sluggish start but emerged in P5 after a hard fought first lap which saw the Dutchman brave out a move around the outside of the Citroen of Tom Chilton. Behind, Tarquini made the better start of the three Lada Vesta TC1 cars to move forward to the cusp of the top ten. The team’s third driver Hugo Valente fared less well sustaining damage from contact with Gregoire Demoustier's Citroen forcing the French LADA SPORT ROSNEFT driver to retire from the race after just one lap.

Catsburg was in the thick of a battle for most of the race with the Volvo of Ted Bjork in front and the two factory Citroens of Jose Maria Lopez and Yvan Muller behind. As the race progressed Catsburg moved to pass Bjork only to find Lopez, who had not been able to pass the Lada to that point taking an opportunist chance and passing the Dutchman pushing him wide in the process and helping his teammate Muller to squeeze through at the same point.

Tarquini had made it into the TOP-10 and the points whilst an angry Catsburg brought his car home in P7 for points to maintain his Championship position.

Race 2, the Main Race saw much of the same. Catsburg fell back in the pack at the start, ceding his place to Tarquini who again made good progress from his grid position. The pair of Lada Vesta cars then became embroiled in a battle with James Thompson's Chevrolet for 10th. 11th and 12th positions in a race long tussle that eventually fell in the favor of the Lada pair, Gabriele taking 10th and the Championship point. Valente just behind after an equally battling race in P13.

Catsburg was far from happy despite taking the highest finish for the team in P7 "Not a very good weekend for me, I lost some pace at the start in both races, and the driving standards of some drivers today left much to be desired, I got pushed wide in both races. However, I had a good fight with James (Thompson) in the Main Race and finally overtook him. I was also struggling with the heat in the car. I think we could have gained more points today. Anyway, we can be happy with the progress we make compared to the previous season".

Gabriele Tarquini "I could overtake in both races but it was very hard. I was happy with the set-up and the race pace of Vesta. This race showed how important the starting position is. We must make a progress in qualifying. Yesterday we could have 6th or 7th position in qualifying but due to the lack of flying laps we finally got starting positions outside the TOP-10.  But the positive thing is that we won’t have a big ballast next round in China. I am still very optimistic, because the car is much better than in Argentina. I am very happy with the balance of my car. Now we have to find a very good set-up for Chinese round and I am sure we can fight for the podiums in the rest of the season".

Hugo Valente like Catsburg was less than pleased with some of the driving standards "I am disappointed with the Opening Race, I had to retire after Demoustier pushed me wide. I am looking forward to China. I guess we should have a good pace there, because we will have less ballast. It should be interesting for us, there are long straights that could be good for LADA Vesta. These two weekends in Argentina and Japan were really hard for me so I hope for better results in China".

Termas de Rio Hondo

Qualy day! Let's go for it 💪🏻👊🏻💪🏻 ‪#‎tiagosworld18‬ ‪#‎honda‬‪#‎thepowerofdreams‬

Good morning from 🇦🇷. It's race day and I want gold in race 1. Full attack 💪🏻👊🏻💪🏻 ‪#‎tiagosworld18‬ ‪#‎wegoforgold‬ ‪#‎honda‬ ‪#‎thepowerofdreams‬

Bom dia aqui da Argentina, é dia de corrida e quero lutar pela vitória. Vamos com tudo!

LADA SPORT ROSNEFT suffer an early exit in qualifying for the WTCC Race of Argentina

After the FIA WTCC season’s longest journey from Russia to Termas de Rio Hondo, Argentina for the LADA SPORT ROSNEFT team came the season’s shortest qualifying session today (6th August 2016) as all three of the Lada Vesta TC1 cars were eliminated after Q1 for the first time this season.

A combination of circumstances including 50kg of “success ballast” for the Rosneft backed cars and an uncharacteristically strong performance from the lighter Chevrolet Cruze’s pushed the Lada’s down the ranking and outside of the all-important Top -12. In the process creating a difficult prospect of race success tomorrow in rounds 15 and 16 of the FIA World Championship.

Best placed of the LADA SPORT ROSNEFT trio was Hugo Valente (P13) who was unlucky to be edged out of Q2 in the final moments of the session. Next up was Nicky Catsburg (P14), who so far has had the best qualifying record in the team but struggled to get the desired pace from his Vesta sighting the need to overdrive the limits of the car to attempt to extract a time.

Gabriele Tarquini was the final of the three (P15) which was to be expected after an engine change was needed after a problem in Free Practice curtailed his running and put the experienced Italian on the back foot with the work to his Vesta being completed just moments before the start of the Qualifying session. The result for Gabriele being somewhat immaterial, as he will take a mandatory penalty for the Opening Race relegating him to the back of the grid in any event. This was additionally frustrating for Gabriele as his early FP1 pace had seen him running as high as p4 before being sidelined by his engine issues.

Despite the results from Qualifying the LADA SPORT ROSNEFT team will race for maximum points in tomorrows (7th August 2016) Opening and Main races starting at 14.10 and 15.20 local time (CET less 5 hours) and can be watched LIVE on Eurosport or streamed via WTCC premium TV.

P4 on both races. Good points for the championship which I am second. I have the feeling that a win was possible in race 1 but things went wrong to my side on the start. Still good efoort from all the Honda Racing WTCC boys! We keep pushing! ‪#‎honda‬ ‪#‎thepowerofdreams‬

Thanks to Jose Maria "Pechito" Lopez and Tom Chilton, the Citroën C-Elysée WTCC notched up two more victories to maintain its unbeaten record in Argentina. The results at Termas de Río Hondo extend Citroën's and Pechito's leads in the FIA WTCC standings. After a podium finish in the opening race, Yvan Muller is closing in on the runner-up spot.

LADA SPORT ROSNEFT ENDURE TOUGH WEEKEND IN WTCC RACE OF ARGENTINA

LADA SPORT ROSNEFT left the FIA WTCC Race of Argentina  at Termas de Rio Hondo today (7th August 2016) empty handed and searching for the reason for a decrease in pace in a season that has delivered so much to date.

The remote Termas do Rio Hondo Autodromo has been a happy hunting ground for the team in past years with 2014 delivering their maiden podium finish and 2015 being the debut for the all new Lada Vesta model and going on to head the timesheets through practice on its racing debut.

The loss of pace was all the more unusual and unexplained given the good results achieved recently but demonstrates the level of an FIA World Championship where small margins in time will have bigger consequences and so it proved this weekend with the teams three Lada Vesta cars a small step back from the front running pace that saw the cars finish just out of the top ten.

Catsburg was the best placed of the teams drivers with a hard fought 13th (Opening race) and 12th place finishes (Main race) but failing to add to his World Championship points tally on this occasion
“Actually I am quite happy because I think I am improving as a driver, my starts are getting really good and we improved the car a lot through the races. I think if I had started Main Race in say 5th position I could have held that pace so I am looking forward to Japan (the next round of the Championship) to try and recover the ground I lost this weekend”.

Gabriele Tarquini (P14 and P13) did not enjoy the best of his WTCC championship weekends having played catch up with his car following an untimely need for an engine change in Free Practice “I think we were better than our results really showed today, we had a bad qualifying and that put us to the back and from their its always hard. I think we probably had the pace for the top 10, ok not to fight for a podium this time but better than we showed”.

Hugo Valente was disappointed with two DNF’s to show for his weekend’s efforts, which included being the quickest of the LADA SPORT ROSNEFT drivers in qualifying “It was a frustrating weekend for me with being the quickest LADA in qualifying only a very small consolation. In the first race I was battling closely with Nicky having a nice battle but on lap 5 I had a loss of power and had to pit. In Main Race I hoped for better but a puncture (probably caused through contact with Demoustier’s Citroen) saw me once again have to retire from the race”.

The words of Victor Shapovalov summed up the team’s weekend “We really need to analyze this weekend in great detail. It is hard to understand exactly what it is, one thing or more that affects our pace. The track, the extra weight for sure and perhaps the top speed of others relative to the things that affected us amplified the difference in lap times. For sure we found some things as the weekend went on so we will take these forward and see how things are at the next tracks”.

The FIA WTCC now once again crosses continents leaving South America for Asia and the Race of Japan at Twin Ring Motegi on the 3/4th September 2016.

LADA SPORT ROSNEFT is a racing team, participating in the World Touring Car Championship since 2015 with specially designed LADA Vesta WTCC cars. The General Sponsor of the team is a global energy company Rosneft. Supporting the Russian team in the World Championship, Rosneft together with the leader of the Russian automotive industry – LADA – joined their efforts to promote Russian brands at the world markets.
